In early 2020 an international aerospace, transport and defense company came to Crystal Group with a need for a 48-port 10Gbe switch that could support a mix of 48 ports of 1/10Gbe SFP/SFP+ connections with front power input for a new airborne application. The switch also needed to have a 50ms holdup, which is the standard power transient needed to transition back and forth between aircraft and ground power per IAW MIL-STD-704.
Starting with our RCS7750-48F was a clear choice as it met the company’s core requirements for number of ports and SFP connections. However, the unit’s power and maintenance are all located at the rear of the chassis—opposite of the request for all I/O, power and maintenance ports to be on the front of the switch.
Our engineers worked closely with the organization’s team to develop a variant of our RCS7750-48F by adding in some height to reroute the port locations and modify the I/O without any impact to the switch’s existing capabilities or performance standards.
Overall, we addressed the company’s unique rugged networking requirements by adapting one of our scalable networking switch designs with a simple, yet effective, design adjustment and strong collaboration with the organization’s team.
