Edge Computing

High-performance compute solutions that deliver powerful, seamless performance in demanding environments

Dust, heat, and humidity are common enemies for computer hardware tasked to processing data with minimal latency and ensure that data is relevant. Whether the equipment is being used to fuse massive amounts of data or real-time inference, delivering real-time, continuous performance is necessary.

Operating at the edge, harsh conditions are expected, and vibration, shock, and thermal management challenges must be prevented before they even begin.

Edge computing brings the data center to the field and front lines by providing rugged, reliable solutions that is required for:

  • Autonomous vehicles
  • Power grid
  • Offshore drilling
  • Weapons systems
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Missile defense systems
  • Shipboard and airborne applications

Delivering high-performance computing at the edge requires expertise in ruggedization. Shock, vibration, and humidity are the key environmental concerns when providing edge solutions. Optimizing thermal performance while limiting solder joint deflection is crucial to system availability.

Why rugged matters

Shock

The purpose of applying a shock pulse to a piece of equipment is to identify any type of damage, like distortion, damage to solder joints and electrical circuits, fractured material, or connection failures.

Vibration

This test looks for wires that might chafe, circuit boards that might crack solder joints or have damage, fatigue failures in metals or materials, and breakage and loose parts in the box when subjected to high levels of vibration. It’s meant to represent the entire lifetime of damage that a unit might endure to determine if a unit can live its life without damage or problems.

EMC

Addresses requirements and test limits for measuring and determining electromagnetic interference characteristics (emission and susceptibility) of electronic, electrical, and electromechanical equipment.

Humidty

Designed to test material that will be used in a warm, muggy environment to test if any potential problems will arise when exposed. This is important to applications where the product will be used in a tropical area, mid-latitude location during certain seasons, and in equipment subjected to changes in pressure or temperature.

Salt Fog

Salt fog testing is designed to measure the resistance of a product to the exposure to salt. This is important in naval applications, but it can be applied to many other environments.

Sand and Dust

It looks at performance as these types of debris go through or settles on systems. The goal of this test is to identify mechanical problems where things jam up if debris gets into the system, like a collection on heatsinks that may impact thermal performance or cause abrasions. This includes both how the system looks, as well as its electrical and mechanical performance.

Fungus

The procedure entails subjecting our hardware to spores of different types of fungi. You’re looking for the breakdown of the materials due to it either being nutrient to (“feeding”) the spores or the excretions from the spores being acidic, which change the material properties. This test is done under high temperature and high humidity to simulate jungle-like conditions.
